“I wanted to engineer the human psyche because it is the area of greatest mystery, of greatest unknown, and more importantly, it is the area in which we, as a race, are failing miserably. Ninety-five percent (95%) of the problems in industrialized society are because people don’t understand people.”
Meta Description: Septemics uses 35 measurable scales to predict how people behave in relationships and business — here’s how the system actually works.
Septemics Explained: The 35 Scales That Predict Behavior
Septemics is a philosophical system built from four decades of clinical observation, designed to help people predict and understand human behavior using 35 measurable scales. Created by human development engineer Jim Marshall, it treats personality and behavior less like an opinion and more like a set of natural laws — the kind you can plot, track, and act on.
How Septemics Started
Marshall trained as an engineer, but by the time he finished his degree, he was more interested in engineering the human psyche than physical systems. Working one-on-one with clients for 40 years, he combined Socratic dialog with biofeedback — a pairing that let him see behavioral shifts happen in real time, in a single session, rather than across a year of weekly therapy.
Over roughly 9,000 sessions, he noticed the same phenomenon repeating: clients occupied a specific, observable level on a specific scale, and interaction moved them up that scale. By 1995, he had recorded 32 of these scales. A breakthrough with one client revealed a seventh level on a six-level scale, which turned each scale from a flat line into a mathematical plane — and confirmed the pattern was structural, not coincidental.
What the 35 Scales Actually Do
Each scale measures a different area of human functioning — motivation, thought, basic purposes, and more. According to Marshall, if a person, group, or activity moves someone up a scale, it’s beneficial; if it moves them down, it’s detrimental. Spotting where someone sits on even a few scales early in a relationship or business deal can reveal patterns that would otherwise take months or years to notice.
Why This Matters for Relationships and Decisions
Marshall points to a blunt statistic: more than half of U.S. marriages end in divorce, which he attributes to people not truly understanding who they’re marrying. Septemics is positioned as a corrective — a way to evaluate compatibility and trustworthiness using data instead of instinct alone, whether the question is personal or professional.

Jim Marshall: People often ask me, well, what do you believe? And I often tell them, most of the time, the answer is, I need to believe, no disbelieve. I’ll give you an example. You know that studies have been done, and they’ve determined that 80% of American people believe in angels. So if you ask me, do I believe in angels? I’m going to say, I need to believe, nor disbelieve. I talk to them, I can see them, I interact with them. They help me, but it has nothing to do with belief. It’s a thing.
Dr. Jim Price: Hello, I’m Dr. Jim Price, and welcome to The Purpose and Progress Podcast. This is the place where we explore how purpose can guide our actions, and how growth can become a part of our everyday lives. On the show, I talk with amazing guests, from educators and creators to everyday people with extraordinary stories about the challenges they face, the lessons they’ve learned, and how to keep moving forward. My goal is to share conversations that inspire you to live intentionally, embrace growth, and take meaningful steps to your own purpose. Let’s get started.
Hello again. Once again, this is your host, Dr. Jim Price, on The Purpose and Progress podcast show where we share inspirational stories of people doing inspirational things that’s able to touch lives, change and motivate lives to be better, want to be fulfilling their purpose, meeting their goals and aspirations of what they want to do with their lives. And today is no different. We have a fabulous guest today. He is an experienced human development engineer and creator of Septemics, a practical philosophical system focused on understanding human behavior and personal development. He also is author of Septemics: Hierarchies of Human Phenomena which explores patterns that can help people better understand themselves, set goals, and navigate challenges. So we have author Jim Marshall with us today. Thank you for being here today. Blessed to have you on the show today, Jim. How are you doing?
Jim Marshall: Thanks, Jim. Glad to be here.
Dr. Jim Price: We were talking before the show a little bit, and we were talking about the differences in the weather. You being in Arizona, and me being in Massachusetts, and we were just talking about how you got warm weather. We just had a tornado here last week, and things are different in that way. And I think that gravitates towards how people can perceive things when they’re trying to reach goals and aspirations in their lives. Sometimes, people want to set goals or complain about things that are happening in their lives, but then they don’t really follow through with a lot of the things or set goals for themselves in that sense. And you’ve had a lot of success in that area, so I think one of the questions that we want to touch upon is like, when did you feel that your journey kind of started? What influenced that for you?
Jim Marshall: Okay. When you say journey, do you mean the journey to Septemics, or just the journey of Jim?
Dr. Jim Price: The journey of Jim and Septemics .
Jim Marshall: Well, it’s two different answers. I’ll be happy to answer both.
Dr. Jim Price: Absolutely.
Jim Marshall: As far as Jim, I can tell you this, I have absolutely no memory of a time when I was not intensely interested in learning everything taught in every university. Now, of course, that’s impossible because nobody can live that long. But the drive was there, and that motivated me. I was a very highly motivated student. I started school when I was 3, and I’ve been involved in education my entire life to this very day. And of course, I won scholarships and was an honor student and all that stuff. I loved school. I can still remember the exact moment when I first discovered that some children didn’t like school. I was shocked. I thought, how can this be? I loved school, and I went to school for 28 years. We don’t live forever. So at some point I said, well, I’m going to do some other things. But anyway, I was sort of a born polymath. I was one of those irritating kids who would go around saying, how does a refrigerator work? How does a TV work? How does the automobile work, etcetera? etcetera. And it was irritating. People say, get out of here, kid. So I learned after a while to just read books and not ask people those things. But of course, when you’re 3, you don’t know how to read yet. So that’s sort of who I was.
I had a very good education. I went to private schools. People figured out when I was small that I was smart, and the fact that I was motivated. There are a lot of smart people who don’t like school, and don’t benefit from school. I was the opposite. I was a smart guy who loved school and benefited from it, so that sort of turned me into who I am, which is a polymathic intellectual who is an expert in about 20 subjects. As far as Septemics, the story really begins when I was accepted into engineering school at the age of 16. Now, of course, I thought at the moment that I was going to be engineering physical things. In other words, airfoils, motors, electrons and such, as did all the other students. But by the time I had my bachelor’s degree, it was obvious to me that I wanted to engineer the human psyche because it is the area of greatest mystery, of greatest unknown. And more importantly, it is the area in which we, as a race, are failing miserably. 95% of the problems in industrialized society are because people don’t understand people, don’t understand the spouse, don’t understand the child, don’t understand the teacher, don’t understand the grandmother, whatever it is. It’s a big problem that everybody has, and Septemics solves that problem. Of course, 35 exits. Meaning, for any given set of facts, there are 35 different ways of coming at it to resolve.
So to make a long story short, I had a long career as a human development engineer where I worked one-on-one with clients of every description. Where I brought engineering principles, engineering tactics, engineering strategies, engineering devices, engineering procedures, etcetera, to human development was not counseling. I never told my clients anything. Actually, what I did was socratic dialog aided by biofeedback. So the Socratic dialog, anybody can read Plato and learn all about the Socratic dialogs. But when I brought biofeedback to it, that turned a horse cart into a rocket ship, and this actually resulted in my finding Septemics because I was getting results on my clients similar to the results of successful psychotherapy, but orders of magnitude faster. A guy goes to say, I’m not getting anywhere with women. I better go to therapy. So he goes to some nice psychologist, talks to him for an hour for a year, he shells out $10,000 or whatever it is. And at the end of it, he says, Doc, I’m doing bad with this. Thank you very much. He goes out and finds a girlfriend. Well, I could do that in 30 minutes. So the difference is the client would blossom in front of me.
So I could see the phenomena, whereas the therapist didn’t see the phenomena because it took a year, and every session was separated by a week. So that’s how I actually found this. I had a long career for 40 years working with people, and I started to notice fairly early on that I could predict the outcome of the session. I never told that to anyone, but I made notes continuously. And so after a while, it became obvious to me after decades that the client would be at a specific level on a specific scale that I had previously observed and recorded. And as a result of our interaction, he would go up to the next level on that scale. Now, this has happened thousands and thousands of times over 40 years. Maybe 8000, 9000 times, something like that. Sometimes, it happened 4 or 5 times in the same session. And then of course when I go out of the session, let’s say to the bank or the supermarket, and I look at some people, they didn’t even know me, and I would see exactly the same phenomenon in those people. The thing I just recorded.
So by 1995, I had simply observed and recorded 32 scales, each corresponding to a different area of human phenomenon. I was working with a difficult client at that time, and I was trying to see where this client was on a scale that I had. By then, I knew the six-level scale. I was having trouble spotting her on the scale. And then I realized, wait a minute, there’s a 7th level, that’s why I wasn’t spotting her. This person was at a level, meaning, she was manifesting something that I had never seen before. So of course, it wasn’t on the scale. But as soon as I saw what it was, I understood the client perfectly. Both retroactively and going forward. But more importantly, I knew what to insert into the six level scale. In other words, that was not a question. And when I inserted it at that moment, that scale went from being a line, which is what a scale is, to a plane. Meaning, a whole body of data. And all of these interlocking, intersecting, interacting mathematical phenomena jumped out at me. I said, whoa! Now, you have to realize that I took 26 semesters in math and loved every minute of it. So I think in math. Now that’s not unusual for people from science engineering math background, which is where I came from. The difference is I was using it on people. So now, I looked at this thing, this plane, and I said, whatever this is, it has to be natural phenomena because it’s got math embedded in it.
Now, I should mention for those of you who are allergic to math, the whole point of math is you start with an equation or a formula, and you coax data out of it until you get something useful to you. That is exactly how Einstein found it. He wasn’t looking. So it showed up in the math, and you go through stages when you’re handling phenomena like that. A formula. You get it to this. Well, let me see what happens if I do this. And then he said, whoa. That’s earth shaking. So that’s sort of what happened here. In other words, I’ve been doing all this work, and suddenly, this math presented itself. Then I thought, wait a minute. I wonder how many of these other scales, it might also be 7 level scales that were not developed all the way. Because you realize I wasn’t developing anything. I was just helping my clients and making notes. So then I thought, well, knowing what I’m looking for, I’m going to study these other scales and see if any of these are actually 7 level scales. So after a while, each of them went to 7 levels. And when it did, it manifested mathematically. You can’t see the math until you get the seven levels. You know the thing about the three blind men and the elephant? It’s sort of like that. You have to see the whole elephant, see what it is. And if you’re only touching the tusk, you don’t know what an elephant is because you see it’s a tusk. So you have to sort of flourish before you can see what it is. I then looked at you and said, wow, I went to school for 28 years, and I never saw anything like this. This looks like a new subject to me. And one that could really help people. Because if I could get this into the hands of the public, they could use it to make their lives better. Because I had this reliable scientific information that I had recorded that I wanted to give to people, so I’m going to have to write a book.
So the first draft was finished in December of ’95, and I immediately sent it to colleagues of mine. All of whom had graduate degrees in various subjects, and they all loved it. They had differing responses, but distinctly positive responses. And this told me that this was exactly what I thought it was, which was a new subject that people would get now. That was 30 and a half years ago. So I have been watching people get this for 30 years. They get it. You don’t have to be a college graduate to figure this out because it’s a natural law. If you can recall when you first learned the Pythagorean theorem, you were maybe 12, 13 or 14. The teacher shows it to you, and you first look at it and say, what’s this? It doesn’t take much to figure out that that makes sense. And once it makes sense to you, you can use it for the rest of your life. I learned the Pythagorean theorem, I guess maybe I was 13? I don’t know, and I just integrated it into my mind. And as I went forward in math, I just kept using it like I’m doing something. Wait a minute, this has got a right triangle in it. The Pythagorean Theorem, solved. So that’s how this works in the world of science, math, and engineering. You have this reliable data that you bring to bear when it’s appropriate, so I thought I could go from helping people by the hundreds to helping them by the millions if I give them this. When I got that response from my colleagues, I thought, okay, this is exactly what I think it is, which is a subject that people are going to get. They get it. The reason they get it is it’s a natural law.
So let’s say a guy’s in a bookstore and he sees this book on the shelf that says Septemics. He says, what the hell is this? He opens it up. It doesn’t matter what chapter he looks at. He’s going to look at it and think, this makes sense. That’s what happens with this. It is not counterintuitive because it’s natural law. Now, several people have asked me, what book is your book like? And I have to tell them in all candor, I don’t think there’s ever been a book like this before, at least on Earth. But every one of these 35 scales is expressed in what you could call a table or a spreadsheet, and that table is very similar to the periodic table of elements. But instead of corresponding to matter, the 79 elements that Dmitri Mendeleev had, now of course we have many more elements that were just integrated in, it corresponds to these 35 different areas of human phenomena. So for example, there’s a scale of thought. There are 7 levels of human thought. Most people do not know that. And if you look at the scale in the book, you’ll see that I’m not just giving you the scale. I’m giving you the whole table. So all these data reinforce one another. That is the main point. It’s like a Chinese puzzle. So after I got the response from my colleagues, I thought, well, I’m going to work on this. I spent the next 25 years of my life writing the book. Because first, I had to discover the phenomenon. I kind of explained to you already how I did that. Although I did find three more skills as I was doing the writing, which is why they’re now 35, then I had to take that data and use it to craft a workable philosophic system.
So now, we’re going from science to engineering. In the world of science, when you hit a home run, it means you create a theory, the theory of evolution or the theory of relativity. But in the engineering world, when you hit a home run, you make something that works. It has to work. You’re never allowed to say, whoops. It’s not allowed in engineering. If you say whoops, you’re out. Go drive a taxi. I had to create something that would work all the time for everybody who could read English. I know I succeeded at that because it’s been over 30 years, and I’ve been watching people get this. They get it. So during that period when I was creating the philosophy, I had to make it work for everybody all the time. That took 20 years because that’s consistent with engineering. Because in engineering, we have factors of error. Margins of error. We have all of these practices to make sure it’s right. When you buy an iPhone from Apple, it’s got to work. And they have hundreds of engineers who are working on this all the time, going all the way back to Steve Jobs, to make this thing work. So that was my burden, to make this thing work. The other thing is, I had to make it accessible to the average reader of English in order for them to benefit from it. That was very time-consuming because I literally had to go through the book word by word and ask myself, how are people going to take this? Is this the best way I can say this?
I can tell you, the book was rewritten about a half a dozen times. Because what would happen is I’d rewrite it, and then I would present it to colleagues, clients, students and such. I got feedback, and some of the feedback was instructive. Ah, yeah, okay. We will write it again. So after a while, I realized that people were getting this. I had apparently created a foolproof system because nobody ever says, when they look at this, I don’t get this. This doesn’t make any sense. That has never happened in 30 years. What they say is, at first they say, this makes sense. And then when they actually study and inculcate it, and use it in their lives, then they say, whoa, this is big. That’s what clients tell me. That’s what readers tell me. Some guy gets to me. He says, Jim, I finished reading your book. It blew my mind. You covered everything. I say, okay, good. I’m glad for you. So that’s the feedback that I’ve been getting. So this is something that really works, which is why I published it. Because as an engineer, I’m not giving opinions or beliefs. Nobody in engineering is interested in opinions and beliefs. They’re interested in the facts. So that is how we live.
For example, people often ask me, well, what do you believe? And I often tell them. Most of the time, the answer is, I need to believe, no disbelieve. I want to give you an example. You know that studies have been done, and they’ve determined that 80% of American people believe in angels. So if you ask me, do I believe in angels? I’m going to say, I need to believe, no disbelief. I talk to them, I can see them, I interact with them. They help me, but it has nothing to do with belief. It’s a thing. That is my whole life. I’m a fact-driven person. Now, of course, if I go into dealing with my mother, my son or some, that’s different. I’m interested in opinions, beliefs and feelings. That’s got nothing to do with Septemics. So I’m giving you a system that enables you to parse human phenomena easily. Let me give you an analogy to show you how easy this is for you to use. I’ve been into gardening since I was a small boy. I know a lot about flowers. You might say, “Oh, you’re into gardening? Come over and look at my house. Come to Massachusetts and look at my garden. So okay, so I show him at Jim’s house, and I go in the garden. Oh, Jim has hydrangeas, irises, tulips, begonias, forget-me-nots. And the reason I can parse it that way is I know a lot about flowers. Now, if you brought some little kid into your garden the same day I was there, he would smell and see exactly what I just saw and smell. But all he can say is, these are pretty, and they smell nice. That’s all he knows. He doesn’t know what a chrysanthemum is.
Dr. Jim Price: Absolutely.
Jim Marshall: Now, here’s the key. Most adults are like that little kid regarding people. They don’t know what they’re looking at. That is why in the United States, more than 50% of the people who get married get divorced. Clearly, those two people did not know what they were looking at. Because if they did, they either would not have gotten married. Or they would have gotten married and lived happily ever after. Neither of those two things happened. Or iif you look at the whole world, all over the world, people routinely elect morons and criminals to run their governments. Why is that? They don’t understand them. So this is a big deal. So everybody has this problem, and I’ve been able to solve this problem. So let me tell you the three ways in which this is useful to anyone. Each of these 35 skills provides the user with an infallible way of determining the salutariness or the beneficialness of any person, group or activity. If the person, group, or activity moves people up the scale, it’s beneficial or positive. If it moves them down, it’s detrimental or negative. So let me ask you this, did the Nazi government move people up the scale? Or down the scale? Compared to the United States government, it’s mixed. But it’s mostly been over the course of time moving people up. So you see what you get when you evaluate this, which is a new thing. I’m giving you a yardstick by which to measure human affairs. More importantly, finding out what level you are at, or another person is at is inherently beneficial and enlightening. If you spot any person, whether it’s yourself, or your spouse, or on a specific scale, when you do, you have an insight. So let’s say you spot your mother on the scale of motivation at level two. Ah, she’s at level two. That explains why she does A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J and K.
Dr. Jim Price: Exactly.
Jim Marshall: See? So now you understand her better. You have a depth of understanding. So this is really useful to people. So let me tell you a little story. I’m a single guy. About a year ago, I met a gorgeous blonde. She looked like a movie star, and we were very interested in one another. So now we’re going to the usual getting to know you routine. What kind of restaurants do you go to? What days of the week do you walk? There’s a lot of discussions like that at the beginning of a relationship. You show me yours, and I’ll show you mine. What kind of movies do you like? We had a bunch of those discussions. So we’re having a discussion. I notice, oh, she’s low on this skill. Okay, unsafe. So we had another discussion. Oh, she’s low on this other scale. And we had another discussion. She’s low on this other scale. Now, the light bulb is going on above my head. Wait a minute! I barely know this woman, and I have already determined that she is at or near the bottom of three scales. In knowing this material as well as I do, and this is axiomatic. You can actually look up the axioms on my website. That told me that when I find out a lot about her, I’m going to find that she’s at or near the bottom of 10, or 12, or 15, or 18 scales. Now, as I point out throughout my book, the people who cause all the trouble are the people who are at or near the bottom of the scales. So let’s say you have some guy. He’s a gang member. He’s a drug dealer. He’s a murderer. He’s an alcoholic. That guy is at or near the bottom of all the scales, that’s why he’s like that. If he weren’t, he’d be like us. He’d be a school counselor, or an author, or something. But you see, that explains what we’re dealing with here. So when I bump into somebody like that, I’m done. I say thank you very much. Have a nice day. Goodbye.

Dr. Jim Price: And I think that’s so important too. Because data does create an opportunity to understand things in deeper depth. Yes, think about data and how they are able to give you functioning points to be able to see the variation of how different things interact in that way. Especially when you talk about human development, that is absolutely amazing work. And I think it’s an amazing book just to be able to pinpoint and do it on a scale level like that. A lot of people can understand things better when they have a scale reference to point to get from, like a scale of reference to start from. And I think that is amazing that you put it in a situation like that.
Jim Marshall: The big thing you have to realize here is that I come from a hard science background. For example, I know that the acceleration of gravity, which is what we call 1g, near the surface of the Earth is 9.8 meters per second squared (9.8 m/s2). That is not an opinion. You can go out with a stopwatch and a golf ball and calculate it. You’ll get the same mirror. That is how engineers work. We start with facts, and then we make calculations, and then we’re able to create something that people want. A car, an air conditioner. In this case, it’s a philosophical system. These scales are correct because I spent most of my life determining that. I did not think this up. I simply observed it and wrote it down. Think about this, when you have some datum that is proven to be correct redundantly for many periods of time with no contradiction, that becomes a hypothesis, doesn’t it? So my hypothesis just kept being reinforced. The more I did it, the more it was reinforced. So I realize after a while, this is natural law. So what I’m saying is, this is reliable information.
Dr. Jim Price: Absolutely.
Jim Marshall: Of course, you have to realize that every person is at some level on every scale. You can ignore that. That’s what’s been going on for 6000 years. But it’s much smarter to use it. So let’s say you want to have a better relationship with your wife. Find where she is on the scale, every scale. Where is she on the scale of motivation? Where is she on the scale of human ability? Where is she on the scale of mental deletion? And every time you spot it, you go, ah, now I see the deal. Now I understand why she says that. Here’s what happens with this when you use it. And you realize, I’ve been watching this for 30 years. The more you use it, the smarter you get because you have insights every time you use it. Every time you spot somebody, you have an insight. You’re a little smarter because you’re smarter. It’s easier to use it the next time you use it. So the next time you use it, use it again, and you have another insight. So this is a virtuous cycle where the more you use it, the smarter you get. The smarter you get, the easier it is to use. And the easier it is to use, the more you use it. So you get smart. So this is something that you keep using. If you live a thousand years, you will still be using this because you’re going to meet new people and new situations. So 500 years from now, some guy comes to you and says, let’s start a business. And you think, let me see where this guy is on this scale. You talk to a guy, you observe, you can spot, ah, I see. This guy’s at level three on the scale of basic purposes. That’s pretty good. I’m getting along with this guy. But maybe you spot he’s at level 5. If you even spot that he’s at level 5, run away because that guy’s going to cause you a lot of trouble. It’s not that he’s a bad person. He’s just at this level, and that’s what they do. So this is when you read the book. It’s very specific. So the data in this book is precise, accurate, and specific. That’s what you get from an engineer.
Dr. Jim Price: I know that numbers and data are what keep things together and everything in terms of having a better understanding, a deeper understanding, especially when you have it in scale like that. Could you let our audience know where we could actually get and purchase the book for our audience that are familiar with and want to be a part of all that?
Jim Marshall: This book is available wherever books are sold, including Amazon, Barnes & Nobles. So if you just type the word Septemics into a search engine, you’ll get thousands of responses, including all the people selling the book, like the Bookstore in Dayton, Ohio. You’ll get that. You have to realize that there are over a thousand videos of me discussing this all over the internet. Doesn’t matter what platform you go to. Spotify, you’re going to see that there’s Marshall talking. Every host is different. So it all comes out a little bit different. So there’s a lot of ways you can go to the website which is septemics.com, which I invite them to do, where you can see what many readers have said, and what many journalists have written.
Dr. Jim Price: Oh man, that was such a blessing, such inspirational words by Jim Marshall, able to share his story of how he overcame so many obstacles and stuff in his life, and to be able to come full circle to be able to help so many people and do the things that he does. So once again, this is The Purpose and Progress podcast show. I’m your host, Dr. Jim Price. And once again, Jim Marshall shared such gems today, and we’ll see you next time. Stay blessed.
